Welcome to Otaru! I hope your journey from Sapporo to Otaru by train was great.
The first attraction for today will be Otaru Aquarium. It’s a 25-mintue bus ride from Otaru Station Bus Terminal. You can find this bus terminal right in front of JR Otaru Station. Stand in the queue at terminal 3rd. The bus that goes to Otaru Aquarium will arrive there.
Founded in 1958, Otaru Aquarium is a must-see spot in Otaru. With over 5,000 creatures from more than 250 species, mainly from the cold seas, this popular tourist attraction offers various shows, such as the dolphin, sea lion, seal, and penguin performances.
Visitors have the opportunity to discover a diverse array of large and small aquariums, featuring a wide range of fish and marine life. You can check the show schedule on their official website. This is important because you don’t want to miss each show. The dolphin, seal and Steller Sealion shows are my favorite!

The Afternoon
After spending the whole morning at Otaru Aquarium, it’s time to explore downtown Otaru. Start your trip with sushi! One of the best places in Otaru to enjoy sushi is Wataraku. The location of this Japanese style restaurant is a few minutes of walk from the iconic Otaru Canal.
Otaru is known as “sushi city”. Many travelers come to Otaru to taste its delicious seafood dishes, especially sushi, and donburi. So grab your lunch at Wataraku and then head over to Sakaimachi Street.
This old shopping street is packed with many shops and restaurants. You can try a variety of street food as you walk along the Sakaimachi Street. Try cheesecake Double Fromage at LeTAO, which is a famous pastry shop in Otaru.
This pastry shop is located next to the Otaru Music Box Museum. Then make your way to this building that is a renowned attraction known for its extensive collection of music boxes. The main building, constructed in 1902, houses over 25,000 music boxes, including antique and modern pieces.
After checking out the Otaru Music Box Museum, head to the iconic Otaru Canal. Take a leisurely stroll along the canal, stop by the shops and enjoy the romantic atmosphere! You will be impressed by the retro gas lamps and old warehouses, which provide a picturesque and nostalgic setting.
If you want to make some great memories, try Otaru Canal Cruise. The 40-minute cruise takes passengers along the picturesque Otaru Canal.
This allows visitors to experience the historic charm of Otaru, and you can see some great views from a boat what other tourists miss from the ground.
The Evening,
If you come to Otaru during the popular Otaru Snow Light Path Festival in the winter, you will experience a romantic glow of candles and lanterns along the canal.
So spend some time by taking a stroll along the canal and see the small snow statues that hold candles, creating a cozy atmosphere.
Your final destination for today is Tenguyama Ropeway. Night view from Mt. Tengu is considered one of the three night views of Hokkaido. The city lights spread out below creates a stunning night view that you would like to experience.
From the observation platform at the top of Mt. Tengu, visitors are offered to a panoramic vista of the city and the Sea of Japan below on a clear day. I recommend you taking the ropeway in the evening to fully appreciate the breathtaking scenery.
Please note that the ropeway operates until 9pm.
To reach Tenguyama Ropeway, take the Hokkaido Chuo Bus bound for the “Tenguyama Ropeway” stop from Otaru Station Bus Terminal.
