Need a breath of fresh air? Sapporo has no shortage of fresh air and you can imagine how clean and beautiful the city is once you arrive there. If you are looking to escape the house and take a day trip this summer, look no further than Sapporo’s Horomitoge Lavender Garden. It is a perfect place to enjoy clean air, relax and get back to nature in Sapporo this summer.

Summer is short in Hokkaido but blessed with beautiful nature and weather. Summer here is associated with beautiful flower fields and gardens of different types of flowers including iconic lavenders.

Some of the lavender plants there are not fully bloomed but still they look stunning.

In Sapporo, summer flowers can be seen in Odori Park, Nakajima Park, Maruyama Park, Takino Suzuran Hillside Park, Sapporo Satoland, Horomitoge Lavender Garden, Botanical Garden of Hokkaido University, Yurigahara Park and so on. Experiencing these gardens, might just be one of the best things to do in Sapporo.

Horomitoge lavender garden is one the best lavender gardens in Sapporo with beautiful surroundings and known for its picturesque views.

You no longer have to visit Furano in Central Hokkaido, where tons of lavender fields with flower gardens await you. Although you can see lavender at Makomanai Takino Cemetery in Sapporo, this garden is unique in many ways.

For many, visiting a lavender garden in Hokkaido is a big dream. There are many tourists who have a busy schedule and can’t move further from Sapporo to Furano.

If you are one of them and want to see lavender, then Horomitoge Lavender Garden is a beautiful place to spend a few hours this summer.

This charming lavender garden is also known as Horomi Pass Lavender Garden.

Horomitoge is the pass from Maruyama to Bankei in Sapporo city. Its road is very narrow, so be careful of the cars passing by when you go on a hike and pay careful attention to driving if you want to reach the spot by a car. 

Located in western hills overlooking Sapporo, this garden is actually a viewpoint/observatory, from where visitors can enjoy beautiful views of Sapporo city during the day and night.

For photographers this is a perfect place to be in summer.

In early July in summer, there are over 5,000 lavender plants bloom here, making the hillsides an amazing place to behold. Visitors can enjoy lavender vistas here until early august.

During the weekend, many visitors come to appreciate the beauty of lavenders with their friends and family.

Walk through the pathways in the garden to enjoy the views of lavender from different angles. You can even spot big mountains in the distance. That’s pretty amazing!

Lavenders start blooming from early July. And the best time for viewing lavender is in mid July.

Alongside viewing lavender, you will also see some other beautiful local flowers that bloom in summer.

Take picture of everything you encounter in this garden and you will never regret it. Visit the shop you see there and buy some lavender flowers and natural lavender oil for a reasonable price.

This is obviously a family-friendly place to visit in Sapporo.

For locals, this spot is regarded as one of the top places to enjoy the night view in the city.

Driving a car along the hilly road that leads you to the garden is an amazing experience and if it does offer a perfect view of the city at night and the night sky, then that is a bonus for your trip.

Like Hiking?!

Take a walk and enjoy the views!

Many of us like getting out and spending time outdoors is good for us.

If hiking is what draws your attention and it is in your blood and want to experience a hike right there in Sapporo, then I would highly recommend you try this simple hike. But make sure you are fit for it.

It is possible to hike there from the station (Maruyama Koen Station). Summer weather may not motivate you to hike there, so check the weather before you plan for a hike.

Remember that you have to walk along the hilly road, so don’t forget to bring drinks and some snacks as you may get tired and want to make some stops before you reach the garden. We recommenced you wear comfortable hiking shoes

How to get there

This path will take you to the garden.

There is no direct bus to the spot. So you have to depend on rental car or a taxi. Note that it is a 15 minute drive from Maryuama Koen Station (Subway).

If you are coming from Odori station, then get off at Maruyama Koen Station on the Tozai Line. Use JapanTaxi app to hire a taxi. The fare is around 1,500 Japanese yen from Maruyama Koen Station.

The best time to see lavender here is between Mid-July and Late-July.

Horomitoge lavender garden is a beautiful attraction in summer in Sapporo. There are some good reasons why you would visit the garden. Therefore, if you happen to visit Sapporo in July, don’t forget to pay a visit to this place, where locals always like to go.
